June 2008

Greetings!

You’re reading this letter because you’ve shown some interest in running cross country at Swartz Creek.  Below we’ll provide you with some information that will hopefully help you make a decision to commit to the team.

“So what is cross country?” you may be asking.  Well, simply put, it is distance-running competition.  In cross country, everyone runs the same race over the same distance, 5000 meters (3.1 miles).  These races are run in parks and on golf courses.  Each varsity team is allowed seven runners (all others are considered junior varsity – everybody runs).  A team’s score is calculated by adding up the finishing places of it’s first five runners.  The team with the lowest score wins.  In the event of a tie, the 6th runner will determine the winner.

Some people say that they can’t run three miles so they should not be on the team.  Well that just isn’t true.  It is entirely possible that a team member may start the summer not being able to run three miles and finish the season in November running up to eight miles.  Our training program is designed to take you from where you are and help you improve slowly but surely.

Cross Country in Swartz Creek has a great tradition.  In the last 25 years, both teams have made multiple trips to the state meet and also qualified several individuals.  At one point the boys’ team won the Big 9 Conference fourteen out of fifteen years.  Now, we compete in the Metro League and we’re hoping to make a name for ourselves here as well.

Now that you know a little about the sport, let us fill you in on what you can do to prepare for the upcoming season.  It’s really no secret – you just have to run.  Basically what we’re talking about is running everyday, or almost everyday.  Don’t worry; there are many opportunities to run with your teammates this summer.

  • Monday through Friday at 8:00 am at the High School starting June 23rd.These practices are not mandatory, they just make sense!  Bring a three-ring notebook.  Note that the week of June 30 to July 4 there will be no practice.
  • Local road races – There are many races in our area throughout the summer.  Let us know if you are interested!
  • Team Camp – We go to team camp just north of Lake City the first week of practice, August 10 – 15.  If you are in shape you can go.  Last year the cost was around $250.  We’ll let you know the actual amount soon.  This year there will be over 250 kids from a dozen schools in attendance.  Camp is not mandatory, but it is recommended.

Our first meet this year is August 27th – the Carman-Ainsworth Cavalier Classic.  There really isn’t much time to get ready, so we need to start running June 23rd.  After you’ve run for a couple weeks, we’ll sit down and map out a plan for each of you, including goals and workouts to reach those goals.

We hope 2008 will be a fun and successful season for everyone.  For more information, feel free to check our web site: swartzcreekcrosscountry.org or email us at amurphy@swcrk.org or rwiens@swcrk.org.  You can also contact us by phone: Coach Murphy at (810) 845-7298 and Coach Wiens at (810) 635-8091.  Hope to see you June 23rd!
